Max Engel first became a doctor in Germany. However, during WWII he was not allowed to practice, and escaped Germany with his wife Annie to Shanghai, China, which was admitting Jews. Eventually Max ended up in America where he was a psychiatrist with the Veteran's Administration in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and in Los Angeles. After 50 plus years of marriage, Annie divorced Max, claiming that they were never compatible. Max lived out his remaining years at a retirement home in Los Angeles.
