Note on Husband: Jacob HORNSTEIN - shared note

The Hornsteins were able to leave Germany and move to London around 1935 where Yanya found work. The Hornsteins and the Müller-Hartmanns must have known each other when they all lived in Hamburg; Susanne, the Müller-Hartmann's daughter, preceded the arrival of her parents and worked as a nanny for the Hornstein's daughters, Marianne and Renate.

In the late 1930s, to find the relative safety of a small town in Surrey, the Hornsteins moved to Dorking to a house on Ladygate Road with the Welsh-derived name Craigelly.

Yanya Hornstein was quieter, more serious and perhaps comparatively a little socially shy. For his company's business he frequently travelled to the United States and Europe. He enjoyed translating Russian poetry and transcribed a work by Nikolai Gumilev for one of Müller-Hartmann's Ten English Songs. Ursula Vaughan-Williams once commented about his charming ability to use puns.

Yanya Hornstein was having an affair with his secretary Susanne, daughter of the Müller-Hartmanns, probably from the time she worked as the Hornstein's nanny.

Note on Wife: Eugenia LUNTZ - shared note

In addition to her refugee work, Genia Hornstein was always active in many musical organizations. She was charismatic, vivacious and ebullient and spoke with a delightful Russian accent. She loved to entertain and in her later years, when visiting New York, she always loved to shop at Bloomingdale's.

Genia Hornstein was in love with Susanne's father, Robert Müller-

Hartmann. Ursula Vaughan-Williams was probably one of the first to learn from Genia, even before the Hornstein's youngest daughter, Eva, was born that Robert Müller-Hartmann was actually her father.
