a Sarah L Johnson aged 15 born Chelsea was living with the family as a servant, it is possible she was related to Williams deceased wife Louisa Johnson Noted Deaths Sep 1870 Gardiner Louisa aged 2yrs Chelsea 1a 190 Gardiner Family written by Glenn Tippett The Gardiner family in which we are interested appears to have its origins in Oxfordshire, England. This is certainly the origin of Stephen's family. The story begins sometime around 1812 when it is assumed that William Gardiner married Elizabeth [surname unknown]. However, despite extensive searches of Oxfordshire records this marriage has not been found. It is possible that they never married or married in an adjoining county. The first definite event in the Gardiner story occurred on 12 July 1812 when the Reverend Charles Marsham baptised William and Elizabeth's first child, William, in Stoke Lyne. In all William and Elizabeth had eight children: 1. William Gardiner, baptised 12 July 1812 2. Stephen Gardiner, baptised 11 December 1814 3. Elizabeth Gardener, baptised 24 Nov. 1816 4. Charles Gardener, baptised 29 Nov. 1818 5. Harriet Gardener, baptised 6 May 1821 6. Mary Ann Gardener, baptised 29 June 1823 7. Hannah Gardener, baptised 28 May, 1826 8. Martha Gardener, baptised 22 June 1829 All the children were baptised by the Reverend Charles Marsham and all were baptised in Stoke Lyne except Mary Ann and Hannah. They were baptised in Fritwell and Bicester respectively. In the baptismal register William senior's occupation is given as a labourer and he probably moved around the county looking for work. In other records his occupation is given as a carpenter and in one case, a gatekeeper. The name “Gardiner” is spelt “Gardener” in the baptismal register and various other spellings are recorded. This is probably because the Gardiners, at this stage, were illiterate. However, once they moved to London, the spelling generally standardises to “Gardiner”. The parish of Stoke Lyne is described on pages 217-220 of “A Topographical Dictionary of England” (1848) as follows: STOKE-LYNE (St. Peter), a parish, in the union of Bicester, hundred of Ploughley, county of Oxford, 4¼ miles (N. by W.) from Bicester; containing, with the hamlets of Bainton and Fewcott, 601 inhabitants, of whom 347 are in Stoke-Lyne township. The living is a discharged vicarage; net income, £173; patrons, the Trustees of J. Bullock, Esq.; impropriators, the family of Coles. The tithes of the township were commuted for land and a money payment in 1793. The following from pages 312-323 of 'Parishes: Stoke Lyne', A History of the County of Oxford: Volume 6 (1959) mentions the Reverend Marsham. During most of the 19th century the living was held …. by members of the Marsham family, the patrons, Charles Marsham being vicar from 1812 to 1867. …. Marsham, though kindly and constant in visiting his parishes, was inefficient and incapable of keeping abreast of the times. He did not see the necessity of a day school; he only held one service on Sundays, alternatively in the morning and afternoon; nor would he hire a curate until he was an old man. Nothing is known of the activities of the family until the death of Elizabeth. She is recorded in the parish register for Stoke Lyne has having been buried on 21 September 1834 aged 45 years old. Sometime after Elizabeth's death but before 1840, the family decided to move to London. This was probably prompted by better employment opportunities. It seems that William may have had relatives already living in London but further research is needed to establish this. The Gardiner family settled into a house on Pond Street (near Rosslyn Hill) Hampstead, a suburb in north-west London. Pond Street runs off Hampstead High Street, just south of Hampstead Heath, not far from the present railway station. William, senior, was a witness to his son, Charles', marriage on 13th January 1841 but by April 1841 when the census was taken he appears to have been a patient in the Middlesex Hospital. The next record of William is a witness to his daughter, Hannah's wedding on 23 February 1846. In both instances William gives his occupation as a carpenter. William died on 3rd March 1860 and was buried in St. John's churchyard, Hampstead on 7th. William junior has also not been found in the 1841 and 1851 censuses. However, he appears in the 1861 census living at 28 St John Street, St John's Wood London with his wife, Margaret and daughter, Emma. His occupation is listed as a gardener and his wife's as a cook. William married Margaret Hook on 3rd August 1853 at the church of St. George the Martyr in Southwark, London. His father, William, was one of the witnesses and his occupation is given as a gatekeeper. Their daughter, Emma, was born about 1853 in Woodstock, Oxfordshire. It seems strange that Emma was born so far from home but perhaps Margaret was sent there to members of the Gardiner family for the birth of her child as she was not married. Margaret died in 1863 and William on 11th April 1878. William's brother, Stephen, was living with his brother, Charles, his wife and daughter Elizabeth in St John's Hampstead in 1841. Stephen's story will be told later. Charles had married Eleanor Ann Hill on 13th January 1841 at St Mary's Church in St Marylebone, London. Eleanor was the daughter of James and Esther Hill and was born in 1823 in Leatherhead, Surrey. Their first child, Hester Elizabeth was born on 9th March 1841 and was baptised at St. Mary's Church, Bryanston Square in the borough of Westminster Middlesex. In the 1841 census this child is listed as Elizabeth but in later censuses there is a child listed as Esther. However, in the baptismal register the child born in 1841 is listed as Hester Elizabeth. It would seem that these children are one and the same person. The confusion may have come about because of the illiteracy of the parents. Charles and Eleanor had five children altogether. The remaining children were all born in St. John's Hampstead. They were: 2. Charles Gardiner, born 21 May 1842 3. William Gardiner, born 2 October 1843 4. Henry Gardiner, born 7 December 1848 5. Eleanor Gardiner, born 6 September 1849 Charles' wife, Eleanor, died in March 1855. In the 1850s Charles took in a boarder, Sarah Tingley. Sarah was born on 21 January 1819 in St Mary Cray, Kent. She may have been living with Charles and his family before Eleanor's death. In the 1861 census, Sarah and her daughter, Maria Sarah, are listed as living with them. Her occupation is given as a teacher. The daughter is listed as Maria Tingley. However, on Maria's birth certificate it states that she was born on 13th October 1856, her father being Charles Gardiner and her mother Sarah Gardiner, formerly Tingley. No marriage record has been found for Charles and Maria so it is assumed that they just lived together after Eleanor's death. Sarah did not live long, dying aged 17 on 21st September 1874 from heart disease and dropsy. Charles lived on until 17th November 1879 when he died from pneumonia and bronchitis. His occupation is given in all the census records as a gardener. Maria Gardiner or Tingley died on 4th July 1893 from pneumonia. Charles' sister, Elizabeth, married Matthew Patrick on 6th August 1840 in the parish church of St. Marylebone, Middlesex. Her father, William, was one of the witnesses. Elizabeth's husband was born about 1816 in Norfolk. He was a shoemaker. As far as can be ascertained, they had only one child, Henry Matthew Patrick, who was born on 8th March 1844. Elizabeth died in January 1900 and her husband died in 1898. They lived in Chelsea, London. Of all the children of William and Elizabeth, little is know of Harriet and Mary Ann. There is an entry for a Harriet Gardiner in the 1841 census which states that she was a domestic servant living with Mary L'Export in Edward Street St Pancras London. Nothing for certain is known of Mary Ann Gardiner. However, it is possible that she stayed in Oxfordshire when the family moved to London. There is a Mary Ann Gardiner listed as being in the Union Workhouse in Woodstock, Oxfordshire in the 1841 census and a Mary Ann Gardiner, born in Fritwell, working as a domestic servant for a widow, Sarah Savin who was farming 365 acres in Bucknell, Oxfordshire. Further research is needed to ascertain whether this is indeed the Harriet Gardiner that belongs to our story. Hannah Gardiner may also have stayed in Oxfordshire and worked as a domestic servant for the Barton family who lived in Stoke Lyne before moving to London to join the other members of her family sometime between 1841 and 1846. Hannah married George Craven in the parish church of St Mary's Lambeth on 23 February 1846. Her father, William, her father, acted as witness. Hannah and George had five children: 1. Mary Ann Craven, born 6 July 1847 2. Thomas Craven, born 10 October 1849 3. George Craven, born 11 July 1852 4. Charles Craven, born 2 July 1857 5. Frederick William Craven, born 1860 They lived in Holborn, London and George was a shoe and boot maker. Hannah died in 1865 and George lived until 1891 The youngest of the children, Martha, seems to have gone to London with the rest of the family. In 1841 she was a domestic servant with the Corbishley family who lived at 7 Pickering Place, Islington. John Corbishley was a boot and shoemaker. Martha married John Taylor, a manchester warehouseman, in 1855. John and Martha lived in Bethnal Green, London until John died, aged 34, on 17th October 1879. They had four children: 1. Walter Joseph Taylor, born 1860 2. Albert John Taylor, born 1861 3. Alice Martha Taylor, born 1863 4. Louisa C Taylor, born 1866 Martha never remarried and died in 1907. As previously stated, William, senior, was a carpenter and his son, Stephen, worked as a gardener on the big houses in the area, probably “The Mansion”, “Frognal Lodge” or “Frognal Hall”. “Gardiner by name, gardener by nature” he used to say. From the census information it seems that Stephen lived with his brother, Charles and his wife until his marriage to Sarah Matilda Farr on 30th April, 1848 at the church of St. Martin's-in-the-Fields. Sarah's father was the illegitimate son of William Farr and Ann Smith. The Farr family had made the move to London between 1841 and 1850 from Elstree in Hertfordshire. In 1851 they were living at 8 Benham Place, St John Hampstead. Members of the Gardiner family were also living in Hamsptead at this time and it seems likely that William Farr, a carpenter, and William Gardiner were workmates or friends and their children probably came together in this way. The area of Hampstead where the Gardiners and the Farrs lived in the nineteenth century was at the edge of the village proper. Close by were the large houses which were abutting onto the heath. Today these have given way to the urban sprawl that has swallowed the Hampstead village. However, many of the buildings from this time remain and Hampstead, although a busy suburb, has a great deal of charm and atmosphere. The church of St John still stands close to Benham Place. After their marriage Stephen and his wife lived at 11 Edward Street, Hampstead. Before leaving for Australia, Stephen and Sarah Matilda had three children. The first, Louisa Matilda Mary was born on 22nd February 1849 and was baptised in St. John's Church, Hampstead on 16th March 1849. In 1852, the family was living at 11 Bayham Street, Camden Town where their second child, William Stephen, was born on 28th January 1852. He was baptised at the Old Church, Saint Pancras on 22 February of the same year. Their third child, Eleanor Ann was born on 21st May 1854 and baptised on 11th June at the church of St. John, Hampstead. She was known as Ellen. Early in the 1850s Stephen and Sarah Matilda must have been discussing emigrating to Australia with members of Sarah's Matilda's family. Her brother, Joshua Jeremiah Farr, and his family left for Sydney as a bounty immigrant early in 1855. Another brother James left in 1858. For whatever reason, Stephen and Sarah Matilda decided to emigrate to Australia - the only members of the Gardiner family to do so. The Gardiners may have seen an advertisement similar to the one run by The Family Colonization Loan Society which appeared in “The Times” and other newspapers in April 1855 seeking applications from potential immigrants to New South Wales. FAMILY COLONIZATION LOAN SOCIETY. (originated by Mrs. Chisholm).- The Committee are prepared to receive APPLICATIONS for LOANS (to Sydney only) by their next vessel, the fine first-class ship Lord Burleigh, A1, 622 tons register, Alfred Clarke, Commander; now lying in the West Indies Export Dock, to sail in early May next. Single females of good character lent one half the passage money. Married couples with or without small families assisted according to circumstances, a preference being given where a majority of the children are females. Single men allowed one third loan. For further particulars apply at the offices of the Society, 29 Bucklersbury. [The Times, Monday, 09 April, 1855 page 3] The Gardiners' application must have been successful and they prepared to leave England for their new life in Australia. The Society paid them paid £25 towards their passage and were loaned the remaining £29. The number of their promissory note was 344. In the immigration records Stephen is listed as a labourer but in most other records he is listed as a gardener. The “Lord Burleigh” left the West Indies docks, London, for Sydney in May 1855 as advertised under the command of Alex Clark. On 21st June it was at latitude 7° south longitude 29° west on its way to Sydney. Until 1852 immigrant ships would stop at the Cape of Good Hope for provisions before they embarked on the approximately 11,500 kilometres voyage across the Indian Ocean to Australia. However, by the time the Gardiners left England ships would venture almost 570 south and then catch the winds for a faster trip to Sydney. No longer did ships stop at the Cape of Good Hope. The voyage so far south was cold and the seas rough and high. It must have been a frightening time for man immigrants. Nevertheless, the Gardiners arrived safely in Sydney on 29th August 1855 after a voyage of 103 days as the following article in “The Sydney Morning Herald” on 30th August testifies: The Lord Burleigh has been 103 days on the passage from London to this port. She has brought 170 passengers, the greater portion of whom have come out under the auspices of Mrs. Chisholm. There has been a great deal of sickness amongst the children, occasioned by whooping cough, which in five cases proved fatal. One birth occurred daring the passage. The Lord Burleigh spoke the ship George Marshall, from Melbourne, bound to London, on the 1st of July, in latitude 27.13 S., longitude 26.20 W. August 13. She laid to off the Island of St. Paul's, for the purpose of procuring water. The next day, 1st September, “The Sydney Morning Herald” reported: THIS week the following ships have arrived with passengers:- The Granite City, from London, with 12 immigrants; Lord Burleigh, from London, with 170 ditto; Charles Ross, from Hamburg, with 100 German ditto.-Total 282 immigrants. The principal part of the passengers by the ship Lord Burleigh, have come out under Mrs. Chisholm's scheme, and most of them consist of married couples with large families. According to the article a gardener could except to earn between £35 and £40 per annum. At first the Gardiners lived in George Street, Redfern, moving to Vernon Street, Woollahra early in the 1860s. It seems that they may have lived with Sarah Matilda's brother, Joshua Jeremiah Farr, who had arrived in Sydney on 23rd May 1855. Once in Sydney, Stephen set about establishing himself. In the Sands Directory of 1863 Stephen advertised his services as a gardener. While living in Woollahra the family increased with the births of Frederick Farr Gardiner in 1857, Herbert James Gardiner in 1859, Ernest Henry Gardiner in 1861 and Theodore Coster on 28 January 1863. Unfortunately, one of the children who had sailed from England passed away here. Louisa Matilda Mary died on 6th April 1864. Ernest, the third child born in Australia, died on 26th May 1863 from dysentery and whooping cough. He was buried in the cemetery at Camperdown on 28th May. Either in 1864 or 1865, the family moved to Mitchell Street, Glebe. It was here that the last four children were born: Lydia Elizabeth in 1865, Sophia Farr in 1869, Naomi Mary Farr in 1872 and Bertha May Farr in 1873. Naomi Mary Farr either died at birth or was stillborn. There are difficulties in establishing just how many children Stephen and Sarah Matilda had. According to Stephen's death certificate, there were eight children living and eight children deceased. The informant was his son, Theodore Coster. It seems likely that he made a mistake and that they had eleven children of whom three died before adulthood. A complete list of the children who can be verified by an historical record is as follows: 1. Louisa Matilda Mary Gardiner, born 22nd February 1849, Hampstead, London 2. William Stephen Gardiner, born 28 January 1852, St Pancras, London 3. Eleanor Ann was born on 21st May 1854, Hampstead, London 4. Frederick Farr Gardiner, born 1857, Vernon Street, Woollahra 5. Herbert James Gardiner, born 1859, Vernon Street, Woollahra 6. Ernest Henry Gardiner, born 1861, Vernon Street, Woollahra 7. Theodore Coster, born 28 January 1863, Vernon Street, Woollahra 8. Lydia Elizabeth Gardiner, born 18 September 1865, Mitchell Street, Glebe 9. Sophia Farr Gardiner, born 1869, Mitchell Street, Glebe 10. Naomi Mary Favi Gardiner, born 1872, Mitchell Street, Glebe 11. Bertha May Farr Gardiner, born 1873, Mitchell Street, Glebe Sometime after 1873 the family moved to Maitland where they lived in Odd Street, Horseshoe Bend. It is not known why they decided to move to Maitland, presumably it was for employment. The house in which they lived is, unfortunately, no longer standing. It was in this house that Stephen died on 17th April 1892 from congestion of the lungs. He was buried in the cemetery at Oakhampton, Maitland, on 19th April. Sarah Matilda went to live with her son Frederick Farr Gardiner in Newcastle after the death of her husband. However, more research needs to be undertaken to ascertain exactly when this happened. She died on 26th July 1914 and was buried in the Anglican section of Sandgate Cemetery on 28th July. To date no wills have been found for either Stephen or his wife. Meanwhile, in the early 1880s, Theodore Coster Gardiner was in trouble with the law. In December 1882, he was charged with stealing a sum of money from Stephen Edmonds. He was arrested by the Lochinvar and Greta police and remanded to appear in West Maitland Police Court. Being brought before the magistrate, Mr. Abbot, on Monday 18th December, he was fined £1 which he subsequently paid. In 1884 he was in trouble again; this time for ill-treating a horse. The following articles appeared in The Maitland Mercury on Saturday, 5th January 1884 and Thursday 20th March 1884 respectively: West Maitland Police Court THURSDAY, JAN. 3, 1884 (Before Messrs Abbot, P.M., W.H.Mullen, P Green, R Scobie and J. Wolstenholme, J's P.) CRUELLY ILL-TREATING A HORSE.-- Theodore Gardiner was charged with having cruelly ill-treated a horse at West Maitland, on the 2nd January. Mr. Thompson appeared for the defence. Senior-constable Wirrell stated that he apprehended the defendant at 3 o'clock on Wednesday afternoon, at Lorn, and asked him how he came to leave his horse at Mr. Birrell's yard. He replied that he had ridden the horse from Newcastle, that on the way it knocked up and he was unable to bring it any further than Birrell's. Witness asked him why he did not go back and look after it. He said that it commenced to rain, and he went home and sent a note on the following morning to his brother [Herbert James Gardiner] to see to the horse for him. Witness then asked him if he was aware that the horse had died immediately after he left, and the defendant replied that he was not aware of the circumstance. Witness examined the horse, and found several wounds on its body. There was a cut over the near eye, a deep cut under the belly, in which three fingers could be inserted, a large wound on the navel -- the two latter were swollen and bleeding -- several wounds on the fore and hind legs as if the horse had been beaten with a blunt instrument. The horse appeared to him to have been either ridden or beaten to death. He cut the brand from the horse, which was RL (R reversed). He received a saddle and stirrup leather from Mr. Birrell. The stirrup iron was bent and knocked about. Thomas Prineville saw the horse after its removal and identified it as the one he saw a man riding from the direction of Minmi. --Mr. Thompson submitted that the case must be dismissed, inasmuch as the police had no power to arrest, as the offence was not committed in their view, but several hours previously. --The bench said that the case might come under the 221st section of the Criminal Law Amendment Act, and it would then become an indictable offence. --James Birrell stated that between 8 and 9 o'clock on Tuesday night his attention was called to a [illegible word] in his yard outside and saw the animal struggling on the ground and thought it was a neighbour's that had got into the yard, he went to Mr. Brackenreg's and on his return the horse was dead. It was a light brown horse, with black points, and branded RL (the R reversed). He got a candle, examined the horse, and found it in a terrible state: it was bleeding, the body was terribly swollen, and there were several cuts. He found a saddle in the yard and put in into a shed, and afterwards found a stirrup-iron and leather alongside the horse. The iron was all bent and knocked about. There were hair and blood on it. The person who left the horse did not inform him of the fact. He gave information to the police and had the carcase removed on Wednesday. The horse had apparently been well-bred, and was in good condition. --Thomas Prineville, a groom residing at West Maitland, stated that he started for the Minmi races on Tuesday morning last, and me the accused beyond East Maitland going in the direction of Minmi. He accompanied the accused, who was riding a brown horse branded RL (the R reversed) he thought, about a quarter of a mile along the road; about 7 p.m. witness and John Maloney were returning to Maitland, and between Minmi and Maitland defendant rode up behind him; he was riding the same horse, which was sweating a great deal, and appeared to be done up; this was about 8 o'clock, and they were then three or four miles from East Maitland; he asked defendant when he met him what was the matter with the horse, and the latter replied that it was knocked up; defendant struck the horse once or twice with a stirrup iron (like the one produced), and witness told him that it was a shame to treat the horse in that way; there were marks on the hock of the horse; in the morning defendant said he was going to Newcastle.--To Mr. Thompson: Newcastle was 17 or 18 miles from East Maitland, and he met the defendant on Tuesday evening about four miles from the latter place; to go fourteen miles in three hours and a half was not hard work; he had seen horses sweat without any apparent reason, and stagger when pains suddenly came on. There was a scrape down the horse's fetlock. In the evening, when he saw the defendant, his clothes were dirty, and he appeared as if he had had a spill. --Mr. Thompson addressed the bench, who decided to send the case to a higher court on a charge of having cruelly wounded a horse, under Section 221 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act. Defendant was committed to the Maitland Quarter Sessions on 13th March next; bail was allowed, defendant in £80, and two sureties of £40. Maitland Quarter Sessions. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19, 1884 (Before His Honor Mr, District Court Judge Wilkinson) The court reopened at half-past nine o'clock. UNLAWFULLY WOUNDING A HORSE. Theodore Gardiner was charged that he, on the 1st January last, at West Maitland, unlawfully, maliciously, and cruelly did wound certain cattle, to wit, one gelding, the property of Herbert James Gardiner. Accused pleaded not guilty, and was defended by Mr. Thompson. It appeared from the evidence that between 8 and 9 o'clock on the evening of the 1st January last, the attention of Mr. James Birrell, then proprietor of the Adelphi Hotel, High-street, West Maitland, was called to the fact that a horse was lying in his yard, and was struggling and kicking. In about ten or fifteen minutes afterwards the horse--a dark bay gelding--died. On examination he discovered that the animal had been terribly illused, especially about the belly, and the wound was bleeding. The off hind leg from the knee to the flank was marked and cut, apparently by a blunt instrument. No intimation had been given to Mr. Birrell by the accused or anybody else that the horse had been left in the yard. A saddle was found in the corner of the yard, also a stirrup-iron, which was much bent. About half-past nine o'clock that morning the accused was met by a lad named Thomas Prineval, who was on his way to the Minmi races, beyond East Maitland, and they rode together for a distance of about three miles. The horse Gardiner was riding was in good condition. In the evening about eight o'clock Prineval was returning to Maitland when Gardiner, who had dust on his coat as if he had been thrown, rode up to him about three miles from East Maitland. The horse he was riding appeared to be exhausted and was sweating. Accused was digging at the animal with his heels, and hit it from left to right with a stirrup leather with something at the end of it which seemed to Prineval to be iron/ It was admitted by Prineval that the road on which the accused travelled was a bad one. The witness also stated that he had seen horses attacked with gripes fall down. After the death of the horse information was given to the police by Mr. Birrell; and Senior-constable Wirrell found the dead animal lying on its side; there was a cut over the right eye, one under the belly an inch long, sufficiently large to allow a person's finger to be inserted, besides other injuries; on the following day Senior-constable Wirrell apprehended the prisoner at his mother's house, and had a conversation with him, in the course of which Gardiner stated, in answer to questions, that the horse was his, that it got knocked up, and he was unable to go any further with it, that he did not tell Mr. Birrell because he was in a hurry to get away, as it came on to rain, that in the morning he sent a note to his brother to come and look after the horse, and he did not know whether his brother had received the letter. He also said that he did not know the horse was dead. Accussed's brother stated the horse was his property, and he lent it to the accused. It was an aged horse, and he gave £3 for it. Certificates of character were presented from Mr. A McDougall, J.P., and Mr. Tulloch of Branxton. Both gentlemen stated that the accused was a quiet, well-behaved man, and was very kind and considerate to animals. Mr. Thompson contended that there was no evidence that the accused inflicted the wounds, and it was not possible that they could have been caused by such an instrument as a stirrup-iron, as the cut was a clean one, in which a person's fingers could be inserted, according to the evidence of the constable. The jury could not presume anything against the defendant. Their duty was simply to consider the facts that had been proved. His Honor, in his direction to the jury, pointed out that they would have to be satisfied that the accused cruelly and maliciously wounded the horse. At half-past three the jury retired, and after an hour's deliberation returned into court with a verdict of not guilty. His Honor, addressing the accused said: “In case you are inclined to act in the same way again I think it only right to say that it is quite possible another jury might have come to a different conclusion.” After this incident, Theodore appears to have settled and there are no further reports of trouble with the law. On 28th May 1887 Theodore Coster Gardiner married Zenobia Winifred Griffits, the daughter of a Scone saddler, in the Methodist Church, Maitland. The marriage was witnessed by two of Theodore's siblings: Herbert James Gardiner and Sophia Farr Gardiner. Theodore and Zenobia had ten children: 1. Bertie Stephen Way Gardiner (1887-1916) 2. Ethel Winifred Gardiner (1889-1973) 3. Lily Sophia Gardiner (1891-1982) 4. Frederick John Gardiner (1894-1919) 5. Percy Theodore Gardiner (1896-1916) 6. Ellen [known as Nell] Zenobia Gardiner (1899-1974) 7. John [known as Jack] Gardiner (1901-1945) 8. Jessie Edith May Gardiner (1904-1875) 9. Daisy Matilda Rose Gardiner (1907-1988) 10. Ivy Bertha Gardiner (1909-1997) Theodore and Zenobia [known as Nobie] spent the rest of their lives in the Hunter Valley moving around Maitland and Newcastle. At first they settled at Four Mile Creek, near Maitland, where Theodore worked on a diary farm. They then moved to George Street East Maitland and in 1904 to 18 Brunswick Street East Maitland. At this time they had a grocery store, “Gardiner's Corner” in Abbott Street West Maitland where they weathered the big flood of 1913. A subsequent move to Maryville must have been something of a disaster, as fleas drove them out and they moved to 4 Bryant Street Tighes Hill. It was from here that sons, Bertie Stephen Way and Percy Theodore left for the First World War. Finally, on the original Anzac Day when Percy Theodore was landing at Gallipoli, the family moved to 4 Hope Street Wallsend. Theodore had a variety of occupations. He is variously listed as being a grocer, builder, painter, farmer and paperhanger. While at Hope Street, Theodore Coster Gardiner became very ill and it was subsequently diagnosed with a brain tumour. He semi-retired and worked the block at Hope Street as a small farm, growing vegetables. Theodore passed away on 1st November 1925 and was buried on 2nd November in the Wallsend Cemetery. Zenobia lived with her daughter, Ethel Winifred at 14 Murnain Street until her death on 23rd May 1939. Zenobia was buried next to her husband on 25th May. Theodore and Zenobia's sons, Bertie Stephen Way and Percy Theodore, were killed in the Battles of Fromelles in 1916 Frederick John Gardiner was the first of the sons to enlist in the army after the outbreak of war in 1914. His enlistment papers are dated 14th November 1914. However, there is no record that he served overseas. Although he survived the war, Frederick died in the influenza epidemic that swept the world 1918-1919. His death was recorded in the “Scone Advocate” of Friday 18 July 1919 in an obituary: MR. FRED GARDINER. The death took place, following a short illness, in the local Influenza Hospital last evening, of a respected and popular young member, of a respected and popular young member of the community in the person of Mr. Frederick Gardiner. The deceased was a trusted employee of the staff of Messrs. Shackel, Garside and Co., and had resided in Scone for a number of years. His parents reside at Wallsend, and his untimely and sad end means that three sons have gone from the home within a space of a few years, as two brothers (Bert and Percy) lost their lives in the great world war. Thus the heavy hand of affliction, in its visitation, has dealt harshly with the Gardiner family, for whom much sympathy is expressed. The late Mr. Gardiner married a daughter (Dorrie) of our respected townsman Mr. A Dodds, but there are no children Frederick John and Doris had one son, Edward Frederick, born in 1916 at Murrurundi However, he either was stillborn or died before his first birthday. Before the war, Frederick John and his brother Percy Theodore worked for Campbell's Stores in Scone. Doris married Joseph Rigby on 19th June 1930 in Redfern. She lived until 1973 when she died at the Ashley House Convalescent Hospital, Chatswood on 27th September. Their other son John [Jack] was a “Jack of all trades” but mainly a lorry driver. He married Florence Martha Hall in 1923. They had six children, John, Frederick, Betty, Joan, Gwenneth and Pamela. Ethel Winifred Gardiner was a cook and also helped at home. In 1919 she married Edward William [Ted] Branch. Edward was a railway porter and his family came from Minmi. Sadly, he passed away on 18th February 1928 aged 34 years old from an infection of the heart. He left not only his widow but also two young children: Allan Edward aged four and Audrey Winifred aged two. Edward Branch was buried in the Wallsend Cemetery next to his parents-in-law. Ethel continued to live at 14 Murnain Street Wallsend and in 1956 remarried; this time to John William Etheridge. However, unfortunately, they were only married about three years when John died on 10th July 1959. Ethel passed away on 10th April 1973. She was cremated and her ashes lie next to those of her second husband at Beresfield Crematorium. Lily Sophia Gardiner helped at home and married William Vine Tippett on 24th December 1912 at the Central Methodist Mission, Newcastle. They lived at 14 Wallace Street, West Maitland, in a house that was built on land bought from his cousin, John Lawer Tippett. After the 1955 flood, they moved to the home of their younger son in Rutherford. Lily and William had two sons: Ronald Vine born in 1916 and Cliff Gardiner born in 1928. William Vine Tippett died at Maitland Hospital, on 8 January 1972 and Lily Sophia Gardiner died on 28th December 1982 at Allandale Hospital, Cessnock. Ellen [known as Nell] Zenobia Gardiner was a clerk and she married Gordon Benjamin Watson in 1923. Gordon was a salesman and they lived in Wallsend. Nell and Gordon had three daughters: Jean Ellen, Jessie Margaret and Barbara Winifred. Gordon passed away on 26th September 1961 and Nell lived until 5th April, 1974. Daisy Matilda Rose Gardiner was a nurse and in the latter part of her career worked at Courtlands Aged Care Village in North Parramatta. In 1933 she married Herbert Loftus Ingersole. He worked for B.H.P. Steelworks in Newcastle. After their marriage they lived in Tighes Hill before moving to Birmingham Gardens. They had two children: Howard and Marie Clair. Herbert died at home on 28th October 1957, aged 49 years. Daisy lived on until 23rd September 1988. While the Gardiners were living at Hope Street they met the Watson family. Jack Gardiner was friends with Isa Watson (born 1902). Ellen [Nell] married Isa's brother, Gordon Benjamin Watson. Jessie Edith May Gardiner met Robert [Bob] Simpson Watson at her 16th birthday party. They married on 30th October 1925 at Wallsend. They had four children: Fae, Lennard Gardiner, Ian Robert and Jeffrey [stillborn]. Robert Watson worked for the Commonwealth Bank and ended his career as the manager of the branch at Epping, Sydney. After retirement they lived at North Rocks, Sydney where Robert died on 11th March 1971. Jessie lived until 18th December 1975. The youngest of the Gardiner children, Ivy Bertha, was dressmaker. She married Harry Hugo in 1932 and lived in Victory Parade, Wallsend close to other members of Harry's family. They had three children: Kevin, Douglas and Judith. Ivy passed away on 26th February 1986 and Harry died on 20th September 1991. The story is far from finished as there are the generations that follow Theodore and Zenobia's family. Also, new research is continuing to bring to light many and various incidents in the lives of our forbears.
